More premises across Fife can now upgrade to faster fibre broadband as a result of the £428 million Digital Scotland superfast broadband rollout. To celebrate, the Digital Scotland team visited Scotland’s Secret Bunker near St Andrews which, thanks to the programme, is now using the very latest in ultrafast technology.
The bunker is among the first premises in the area to upgrade to Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) technology. This technology is being used by the bunker to speed up and develop its online operations and attract more visitors. The bunker has been a secret hidden beneath an innocent Scottish farmhouse for 40 years and was initially built to withstand a nuclear attack.
Kirsty Weir, PR/marketing manager at Scotland’s Secret Bunker said: “It was a pleasure to join the Digital Scotland team to celebrate the availability of fibre broadband in Fife. It's good to see this project reaching more communities and giving an increasing number of homes and businesses the chance to connect to high-speed broadband.”
Morag Miller, strategic growth and city deals programme manager for Fife Council, said: “I’m delighted to see one of Fife’s iconic visitor attractions, Scotland’s Secret Bunker, benefiting from FTTP delivered by the Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband programme. This will provide multiple benefits to the business and visitors to Fife.”
All of the latest local properties reached by the rollout – in the Crail, St Monans, Ladybank and Strathkinness exchange areas – can also now connect to the most reliable and fastest residential broadband available as Openreach engineers build more FTTP to help harder-to-reach homes join the digital revolution.
The technology is capable of delivering the fastest residential broadband speeds in the UK – up to 1Gbps* – about 22 times faster than the current UK average of 46Mbps.
* These are the top wholesale speeds available over the Openreach Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) and Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) networks to all service providers – speeds offered by service providers might vary.
