We’re expanding our fibre to the premises network to new areas

As our Fibre First programme accelerates further into 2019, I’m pleased to announce that we’ll be building in 11 new locations, bringing the total number of UK cities, towns and boroughs to 25.

How we’re expanding our network

We’ll be expanding our fibre to the premises (FTTP) network to Bury, Barking & Dagenham, Bexley, Croydon, Greater Glasgow, Harrow, Merton, Redbridge, Richmond upon Thames, Sutton Coldfield and Salford.

These new locations build on our commitment to reach three million homes and businesses with full fibre by the end of 2020. This will set us on the right trajectory to achieve 10 million premises and beyond by the mid-2020s, should the conditions be right. We’re ambitious and want to build our full fibre network at a vast scale, at high quality and as quickly as possible. This will ensure the country has a reliable broadband network capable of supporting future data-hungry services and applications essential for boosting productivity and sustaining our position as a leading digital economy.

The advantages of FTTP

FTTP broadband connections offer greater capacity and more reliability, and can deliver download speeds of up to 1Gps. Full fibre provides enough bandwidth for a family of four to all stream either ultra HD or 4K quality movies and TV simultaneously, and without interruptions. You could also download a two-hour HD movie in 25 seconds or 45-minute HD TV programme in just five seconds.

We’re committed to building the infrastructure the UK needs to stay ahead in the global digital economy and I believe that our heavy investment in the network and our people will help to future proof the UK for generations to come.
